AN ACT TO DESIGNATE A ROAD IN ALLENDALE COUNTY AS "THOMAS S. AND CLARA G. MCMILLAN MEMORIAL HIGHWAY".
Whereas, Thomas Sanders McMillan was a native of Ulmer in Allendale County and his wife Clara Gooding McMillan was a native of Brunson in Hampton County; and
Whereas, both were active in civic and political affairs, with Mr. McMillan serving as a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives where he served one term as Speaker Pro Tempore and one term as Speaker; and
Whereas, Mr. McMillan served as a member of the United States Congress as a representative from the First Congressional District which was at that time composed of the counties of Allendale, Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Clarendon, Colleton, Dorchester, Hampton and Jasper, serving continuously after his original election for fourteen years until his death in 1939; and
Whereas, Clara Gooding McMillan was elected to fill the unexpired term of her husband; and
Whereas, because of their dedicated public service these prominent South Carolinians are still remembered and respected. Now, therefore,
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
Thomas S. and Clara G. McMillan Memorial Highway
Section 1. The road which extends from Highway 301 to Highway 278, known as Road S-3-74, is designated "Thomas S. and Clara G. McMillan Memorial Highway". The Department of Highways and Public Transportation shall install appropriate markers or signs at places along such road, as it deems advisable, containing the words "Thomas S. and Clara G. McMillan Memorial Highway".
Time effective
Section 2. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
