AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 44-61-80, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT CERTIFICATES FOR EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIANS SHALL BE RENEWABLE FOR THREE RATHER THAN TWO YEARS, TO AUTHORIZE WAIVERS OF REFRESHER COURSES FOR TECHNICIANS UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS AND TO EXTEND CERTIFICATES ISSUED FOR LESS THAN THREE YEARS FOR A ONE YEAR PERIOD.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
Certificates issued for three year period
Section 1. Item (d) of Section 44-61-80 of the 1976 Code is amended to read:
"(d) A certificate so issued shall be valid for a period not exceeding three years from the date of issuance and may be renewed subject to the holder completing a refresher course and examination as required by the department and provided for by this chapter; provided, that upon completion of forty-eight hours of in-service training during the three years between renewal dates, and passage of the examination as provided for by the department, the refresher course requirements may be waived; provided, further, that failure to successfully pass the examination after two attempts will require completion of the refresher course and re-examination; provided, further, that the curriculum for in-service training programs required in this item shall include but not be limited to subject matter prescribed by the department."
Certificates extended
Section 2. The certificates of emergency medical technicians referred to in Section 1 of this act which have been issued for a period of less than three years are extended one year from the scheduled expiration date thereof in order to allow additional time to comply with the in-service training option established in the amendment to Section 44-61-80 of the 1976 Code amended in Section 1 of this act.
Time effective
Section 3. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
