TO REQUEST THE SOUTH CAROLINA MEDICAL ASSOCIATION TO REEVALUATE EXISTING POLICIES PERTAINING TO CIRCUMCISION AND EPISIOTOMY.
Whereas, it has come to the attention of the members of the General Assembly that there is currently a debate going on in the medical community and in medical literature concerning the advisability of and consequences regarding circumcision and episiotomy; and
Whereas, although these procedures currently are regarded by physicians as conforming with existing accepted medical practices, it may be time to reevaluate the use of either one or both of these procedures; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, hereby request the South Carolina Medical Association to undertake a reevaluation of these procedures and report their findings to the appropriate standing committees of the General Assembly. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the South Carolina Medical Association is requested to reevaluate existing policies pertaining to circumcision and episiotomy and report its findings to the appropriate standing committees of both Houses of the General Assembly.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the President of the South Carolina Medical Association.
