A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 20-7-490, AS AMENDED, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO DEFINITIONS IN THE CHILDREN'S CODE, SO AS TO INCLUDE THE DEFINITION OF "SHAKEN BABY SYNDROME."

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION 1. Section 20-7-490 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding at the end:

"(T) `Shaken baby syndrome' means the violent shaking, throwing, or twirling of an infant or child causing massive traumatic intracranial and intraocular bleeding. This syndrome often results in brain damage and mental retardation."

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
