TO EXPRESS THE DEEP APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA TO THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS OF SOUTH CAROLINA FOR THEIR INVALUABLE DEDICATION AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR COMMUNITIES ON THE OCCASION OF THE "YOUTH OF THE YEAR CELEBRATION" APRIL 5 AND 6, 2000, AND TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE OUTSTANDING 2000 YOUTH OF THE YEAR CANDIDATES.
Whereas, approximately sixty Boys and Girls Clubs throughout South Carolina are administered by trained professional staff and volunteers who have positively impacted the lives of thousands of our young people with a wholesome, supportive, and stimulating environment; and
Whereas, these clubs strive to build hope, dignity, and self-esteem in each young person every day by promoting academics and assisting in developing a strong school work ethic, teaching fair play, and respect for others; and
Whereas, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America have served as leading youth development organizations in our nation for more than a century. Under the theme, "You needed us then. We need you now", these clubs emphasize to alumni the importance of their time, talent, and support to the continued ability of Boys & Girls Clubs to provide vital programs and services to our future leaders; and
Whereas, the candidates for the 2000 Youth of the Year Award must demonstrate unselfish service and exceptional leadership qualities in their respective Boys & Girls Club in order to be selected. Other considerations include school activities, community service, and activities with the club; and
Whereas, the following persons have been selected as candidates for this year's award: Brandon Meadows, Maureen Brown, Kaleena Capers, Lamar Moorehead, Desaray Murphy, Alvin Spivey, Brianna Watson, Denita Burris, Shamae Hemingway, Johnathan Barron, Barry Kerns, Kendrick Armstrong, and Taneisha Boon; and
Whereas, all of the individuals who have been competing for this prestigious award -- finalists and nonfinalists alike -- are to be congratulated for their participation, interest, and desire to improve their own lives and skills and by so doing are setting an example for the youth of our State and nation that sacrifice, perseverance, and service all lead to self-esteem, satisfaction, and accomplishment. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express deep appreciation to the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Carolina for their invaluable dedication and contributions to our communities on the occasion of the "Youth of the Year Celebration" April 5 and 6, 2000, throughout the Palmetto State and to recognize and commend the outstanding 2000 Youth of the Year Candidates.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Office of the Midlands Boys & Girls Club.
