TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND CONCERN OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA REGARDING THE UNPRECEDENTED INCREASES IN THE PRICE OF NATURAL GAS AND THE RESULTING IMPACT ON OUR STATE'S FAMILIES AND BUSINESSES AND URGE THE CONGRESS AND PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION TO ENACT AN ENERGY POLICY THAT WILL ENSURE AN ADEQUATE, REASONABLY PRICED SUPPLY OF NATURAL GAS FOR CONSUMERS IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES.
Whereas, hundreds of thousands of South Carolinians rely upon natural gas to heat their homes; and
Whereas, increasing amounts of the State's electric generation is dependent upon natural gas as a source of energy; and
Whereas, South Carolina has experienced one of its coldest winters in many years, thus requiring hundreds of thousands of South Carolinians to consume unusually large amounts of natural gas to heat their homes, schools, churches, and businesses; and
Whereas, the cost of natural gas has quadrupled in price in just the past twelve months, forcing natural gas providers in South Carolina to pass these unprecedented price increases along to their customers; and
Whereas, this unprecedented increase in the cost of natural gas is causing a severe economic hardship to many South Carolina families, especially the elderly and disabled living on fixed incomes; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are alarmed to learn of the monthly natural gas bills of ordinary South Carolinians that range from three hundred dollars to one thousand dollars or more for one month's supply of natural gas, which in most instances far exceeds the normal mortgage payment for most South Carolinians; and
Whereas, it is most apparent there is a severe imbalance in the nation's supply of natural gas relative to the increasing demand in consumption that has resulted in the astronomical producer price of natural gas; and
Whereas, if the recent, unprecedented rise in natural gas prices continues, many South Carolina families will suffer financially and South Carolina's economy will be adversely affected as well. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina express its profound concern regarding the unprecedented increases in the price of natural gas and the resulting impact on South Carolina's families and businesses and urges the Congress and the President of the United States to take appropriate action and to enact an energy policy that will ensure an adequate, reasonably priced supply of natural gas is available for consumers in South Carolina and throughout the United States.
Be it further resolved that copies of this resolution be forwarded to the President of the United States, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the President of the United States Senate, and each member of the South Carolina Congressional Delegation.
