COMMENDING AND THANKING F. HUGH ATKINS OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY FOR HIS DEDICATED AND DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONER FOR THE FOURTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT.
Whereas, F. Hugh Atkins of Spartanburg County has served the people of the great State of South Carolina as South Carolina Department of Transportation Commissioner from the Fourth Congressional District since 1998; and
Whereas, Mr. Atkins is retiring from this position in 2002; and
Whereas, Mr. Atkins is a 1955 graduate of Clemson University and was named "Spartanburg Home Builder of the Year" for 1963 and 1992; and
Whereas, he served as President of the Spartanburg Board of Realtors in 1973 and as Director of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce from 1976 to 1998; and
Whereas, he was elected chairman of the Spartanburg County Planning and Development Commission in 1980, served on the Spartanburg County Land Use Appeals Board from 1992 to 1997, served on the State Development Board as chairman of the permanent Advisory Council from 1992 to 1994, served on the Clemson University Board of Visitors from 1994 to 1996, was chairman of the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee from 1994 to 1995, was the first member of the South Carolina Housing Hall of Fame (1996), and received the Order of the Palmetto, the state's highest honor, in 1996; and
Whereas, Mr. Atkins has dedicated his life to the service of mankind; he brought his knowledge and expertise to the South Carolina Department of Transportation and rendered exemplary service in that capacity; and
Whereas, it is a pleasure to acknowledge such an astute individual and praise him for his many years of outstanding public service. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commends and thanks F. Hugh Atkins of Spartanburg County for his dedicated and distinguished service as South Carolina Department of Transportation Commissioner for the Fourth Congressional District.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Atkins.
