TO WELCOME THE CAMDEN HIGH SCHOOL 2001 AAA STATE CHAMPION BULLDOGS TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AND CONGRATULATE THEM ON THEIR SUPERLATIVE FOOTBALL SEASON AND BREATHTAKING OVERTIME TITLE VICTORY.
Whereas, the 2001 Camden High School football Bulldogs snatched the AAA state title from perennial power Union High School in a 24-21 overtime victory at Carolina Coliseum on Saturday, December 1, 2001; and
Whereas, the winning Jake Broom field goal capped the best ever offensive effort in Bulldog football history, bringing its school record scoring offense to 550, with an average of 36.7 points a game; and
Whereas, the championship crown earned Coach Jimmy Neal the record for best winning percentage in Camden's 107-year football history, at over .800, and recognition as the Coach of the Year by the Associated Press and High School Sports Reports; and
Whereas, the offensive trio of junior quarterback Eric McCollom, senior tailback Marcus Brown, and senior wide receiver Kelvin Grant all set individual scoring records at the rate of two apiece: most passing and touchdown yards for McCollum, most TD's and all-time rushing leader for Brown, and most receptions for most receiving yards for Grant; and
Whereas, post-season and all-star honors have poured in for the offensive three, as well as for offensive tackle William Washington and defensive back Bruce Lee who were North-South All-Star players and for the fourteen team members selected to the All-Region and All-Area teams; and
Whereas, at least three South Carolina football teams will have a Camden flavor in the future, as Clemson, The Citadel, and Allen have all attracted signees from the title team. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives welcome the Camden High School 2001 AAA State Champion Bulldogs to the South Carolina House of Representatives and congratulate them on their superlative football season and breathtaking overtime title victory.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Neal and the team.
