TO CONGRATULATE MR. BOB BELDEN OF GOOSE CREEK, SOUTH CAROLINA, WHO AS A JAZZ MUSICIAN HAS TURNED HIS OUTSTANDING TALENT INTO BECOMING A THREE-TIME GRAMMY AWARD WINNER.

Whereas, Bob Belden was born in Evanston, Illinois on October 31, 1956, and was raised in The Oaks Estates community in Goose Creek, South Carolina by his mother, Mrs. Mary Passailaigue Belden along with his brother and sister, Bill and Beth; and

Whereas, Mr. Belden was singing The Lord's Prayer at only ten months of age and taking piano lessons by age three;

Whereas, Mr. Belden's middle and high school band instructor Judith McBride noticed an early talent in performing, composing, and arranging; and

Whereas, Mr. Belden, at the age of sixteen, was enrolled at North Texas State University where he majored in music composition and played tenor saxophone in the school's renowned One O'Clock Band;

Whereas, after college in 1978 he toured throughout the world with Woody Herman and then moved to New York in 1983 where he arranged music themes for ESPN and television movies; and

Whereas, in 1988 his first big gig as a bandleader led to a record offer with Blue Note Records; and

Whereas, Bob Belden made a name for himself with two Grammy nominations for his work as an arranger for the McCoy Tyner Big Band and as a producer for productions including "Animation/Imagination", "Times Mirror", and "The Latin Side of John Coltrane"; and

Whereas, his 1996 release of "Miles Davis & Gil Evans: The Complete Columbia Studio Recordings" earned him a Grammy Award as producer and two Grammys as a lines notes writer; and

Whereas, his most recent work includes composing the musical scores for "The Riff", "Three Days of Rain", and "Black Dahlia"; and

Whereas, although Mr. Belden now thinks of himself as a New Yorker, he still cherishes his memories of growing up in the lowcountry of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate congratulate Mr. Bob Belden of Goose Creek, South Carolina who as a jazz musician has turned his outstanding talent into becoming a three-time Grammy Award winner.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Bob Belden.
