A HOUSE RESOLUTION

HONORING THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES AND HISTORY AND RECOGNIZING ITS SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN THE STATE AS IT CELEBRATED ITS CENTENNIAL YEAR IN 2005.

Whereas, the South Carolina Department of Archives and History is the agency charged with preserving the state's historic government records, and it is appropriate to celebrate the department's one-hundredth year carrying out this most worthy mission; and

Whereas, the department was created in 1905 as the South Carolina Historical Commission; and

Whereas, the department, now in its fourth home, is housed at the Archives and History Center, which protects one of the most comprehensive and valuable collections of colonial and state records in the nation. In fact, the department is proud to boast one of the most significant collections of colonial period documents of any of the original thirteen colonies; and

Whereas, the records housed at the Archives and History Center span over three hundred thirty years of rich, South Carolina history from 1691 to the recent past; and

Whereas, the department preserves and promotes South Carolina's heritage through historic preservation, education, and records management programs. The department works hand-in-hand with both state and local government agencies to ably manage the state's public records efficiently and effectively to protect those items of historic value; and

Whereas, the department's State Historic Preservation Office works with individuals and communities to identify, recognize, and preserve historic buildings, structures, and sites that played a role in South Carolina's history. The department also administers the State Historical Marker Program; and

Whereas, the National History Day Program, which encourages middle and high school students to use primary documents to research and interpret history, is also sponsored by the department; and

Whereas, over nine thousand researchers visit the Archives and History Center each year to benefit from the center's vast collection of historic resources; and

Whereas, it is with great Southern pride that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause to honor and celebrate one hundred years of historic preservation and maintenance of the "memory" of the government of South Carolina by the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor the South Carolina Department of Archives and History and recognize its significant role in historic preservation in the State as it celebrated its Centennial Year in 2005.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Rodger Stroup, Director of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.
