INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S. 1345) to request the Department of Transportation name the section of Highway 76 in Sumter County, from the Sumter-Lee County line to its intersection with Bell Road, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE SECTION OF HIGHWAY 76 IN SUMTER COUNTY, FROM THE SUMTER-LEE COUNTY LINE TO ITS INTERSECTION WITH BELL ROAD, AS THE "MAYOR WILLIE M. JEFFERSON HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY CONTAINING THE WORDS "MAYOR WILLIE M. JEFFERSON HIGHWAY".

Whereas, Willie M. Jefferson was born in Mayesville and attended the Mayesville Institute; and

Whereas, following completion of his studies at the Mayesville Institute, Mr. Jefferson received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Allen University and a Masters of Science degree in Education from South Carolina State University; and

Whereas, Mr. Jefferson completed further studies at the University of North Carolina, University of South Carolina, and Francis Marion University; and

Whereas, Mr. Jefferson has served the students of the State of South Carolina as a teacher, principal, assistant superintendant, and consultant in numerous schools, districts, and counties across this State; and

Whereas, Mr. Jefferson is currently or has been affiliated with the National Education Association, the South Carolina Education Association, the Lee County Education Association, the National Association of School Personnel, and the South Carolina Association of School Administrators; and

Whereas, Mr. Jefferson is a member of the Do-Right Lodge #377 F.A.M. and Gamma Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity; and

Whereas, Mr. Jefferson is a member of the Bishopville Optimist Club, the Sumter County Chapter of the NAACP, the Lee County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, and the Lee County Chapter of General Alumni Association of Allen University; and

Whereas, Mr. Jefferson has served on the Board of Trustees for Allen University and Tuomey Regional Medical Center, on the Board of Directors for NBSC, Bishopville, S.C., Wateree Community Actions, as the Director of Alumni Affairs for Allen University, and Mayor of Mayesville. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the section of Highway 76 in Sumter County, from the Sumter-Lee County line to its intersection with Bell Road, as the "Mayor Willie M. Jefferson Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway containing the words "Mayor Willie M. Jefferson Highway".

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and to Mr. William M. Jefferson.
