A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE MAKENZIE JANE ASHLEY, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, ON BEING SELECTED TO RECEIVE THE 2010 BERNARD CARROLL BALLENTINE SCHOLARSHIP, AND TO WISH HER SUCCESS AS SHE EMBARKS ON HER COLLEGE CAREER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause to honor Makenzie Jane Ashley of Little Mountain, the daughter of Dee Dee and Ernie Ashley, who has been awarded the 2010 Bernard Carroll Ballentine Scholarship; and

Whereas, aspiring to study psychology at the University of South Carolina, Makenzie Ashley served as treasurer of the Chapin High School student government for two years and has earned membership in Beta Club, National Honor Society, and Honor Roll; and

Whereas, she has attended Clemson University's High School Leadership Conference and several camps and conferences sponsored by the South Carolina Association of Student Councils, and she was selected to participate in Palmetto Girls State; and

Whereas, while she works twenty-five hours a week at a part-time job, she remains extensively involved in her community, participating in numerous civic and church activities including Chapin Community Day of Service and Clothe-A-Child, an outreach to assist underprivileged children purchase new clothes for school, and she still volunteers many hours at her school; and

Whereas, Representative Nathan Ballentine established the Bernard Carroll Ballentine Scholarship in 2006 in honor of his paternal grandfather who passed away in 1976 and in furtherance of his commitment to return his legislative salary to the community. Bernard Carroll Ballentine graduated from Irmo High School, served with honor in the United States Army during World War II, and was a former fire chief in Columbia; and

Whereas, the Bernard Carroll Ballentine Scholarship is awarded annually to one high school senior who plans to attend the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize such a noteworthy student and fine young woman as Makenzie Jane Ashley, an outstanding daughter of Richland County and of this State, who has brought pride to her family, school, and community. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Makenzie Jane Ashley, of Richland County, on being selected to receive the 2010 Bernard Carroll Ballentine Scholarship, and wish her success as she embarks on her college career at the University of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Mackenzie Jane Ashley.
