A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE PICKENS HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2013 CLASS AAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to learn that the members of the Pickens High School girls golf team took top honors at the state competition on October 29, 2013, at Black Bear Golf Club in Longs; and

Whereas, Pickens High School has fielded a girls golf team for only seven years, and this year, the Lady Blue Flame set a championship tone early in the season with a first-place finish at both the Laurens Lady Raider Invitational on September 16 and the Wren Lady Hurricane Invitational on September 22 and 23; and

Whereas, in a rematch of the 2012 state championship when Greenville High School bested Pickens by ten strokes, the Pickens Lady Blue Flame defeated the Greenville golfers, their nearest competitor, by nineteen strokes; and

Whereas, taking an eighteen-point lead after the first day with a score of 322, the Lady Blue Flame added 338 on the second day after some difficulties on the front nine, but they still managed to take their team's first-ever state championship with a team score of 660 for the two-day tournament; and

Whereas, finishing the season with an amazing 19-0 record, the Pickens team will return two juniors, two sophomores, two freshmen, one eighth grader, and three seventh graders for the 2014 season; and

Whereas, the two seniors on the team, Maddisen Cox and Claire Page, have signed to play for colleges in the Palmetto State, the former for Converse College and the latter for Limestone College; and

Whereas, in a sport that demands careful strategy and patient skill on the fairways and greens, Head Coach Frank Sullivan and his skilled coaching staff used their own athletic ability and training to build a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the greens; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly appreciate the pride and recognition that the Pickens High School golfers have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Pickens High School girls golf team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2013 Class AAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Marion Lawson and Coach Frank Sullivan.
