A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE PINEWOOD PREPARATORY SCHOOL GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE CLASS AAA SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Pinewood Preparatory School girls varsity basketball team of Dorchester County took top honors at the state competition at the Sumter Civic Center on Saturday, February 23, 2013; and

Whereas, to the delight of their fans, the Pinewood Lady Panther seniors Raygon Hendrix, Brianna Boyd, Katelyn Dambaugh, Maria Corella, Jenifer Rhodes, and Jazlyn Hooks hit the backboards and pressed the Heathwood Hall Lady Highlanders to a 57-50 victory and brought home the state trophy; and

Whereas, with scores tied at the end of the first half, Pinewood returned to the court and outscored the Highlanders 18-12 in the third period and held on to their lead to win the team's fourth state championship in only five seasons; and

Whereas, Panther Raygon Hendrix led scoring with 15 points, making ten out of ten free throws in the fourth quarter. Katelyn Dambaugh posted 12 points in the game, and Maria Corella put up 11 points; and

Whereas, the Pinewood hoopsters recorded an exceptional 27-4 season, with a 12-0 record in their region, the first season ever for Pinewood to post a perfect regional season; and

Whereas, Brianna Boyd and Maria Corella both surpassed career scores of 1,000 points this season, and four seniors have signed to play college basketball while another one signed to play college golf; and

Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, agility, and skill, Head Coach Nancy Beatty and her accomplished coaching staff capitalized on their own athletic ability and training to mold a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the court; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the Pinewood Preparatory varsity basketball players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Pinewood Preparatory School girls varsity basketball team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the South Carolina Independent School Association Class AAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head of School Steve Mandell and Coach Nancy L. Beatty.
