A BILL

TO AMEND SECTION 10-1-161, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO FLAGS BEING FLOWN AT HALF-STAFF AT THE STATE CAPITOL BUILDING, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT THE FLAGS MUST BE LOWERED TO HALF-STAFF FOR MEMBERS OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY SERVICES, WHO WERE RESIDENTS OF THIS STATE AND WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE LINE OF DUTY, ON THE DAY THEIR NAMES ARE RELEASED TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC UNTIL AT LEAST DAWN THE SECOND DAY AFTER FUNERAL SERVICES ARE CONDUCTED.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Section 10-1-161(D) of the 1976 Code is amended to read:

"(D)    In addition to the public officials enumerated in subsection (B), flags atop the State Capitol Building must be lowered to half-staff on the day when funeral services are conducted for members of the United States military services who were residents of South Carolina and who lost their lives in the line of duty while in combat on the day the names of the deceased service members are released to the general public. Flags are to remain at half-staff until at least dawn of the second day after funeral services are conducted."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
