A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS APPRECIATION FOR MR. BRIAN MORGAN, HIS STUDENTS AND OTHER VOLUNTEERS, REVEREND SIMMONS AND THE CONGREGATION OF REEDY RIVER BAPTIST CHURCH FOR THEIR PROFOUND COMPASSION FOR AND SERVICE TO THOSE WITHOUT A HOME IN THEIR COMMUNITY AND TO COMMEND THEIR ACTIONS TO THE PEOPLE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, Duncan Chapel Elementary School art teacher Brian Morgan has been leading his students, as well as adult volunteers, in preparing bag lunches for homeless individuals; and

Whereas, public funding for the food prepared by volunteers ran out, endangering the limited meals that the homeless individuals were receiving; and

Whereas, Reedy River Baptist Church, which was founded in 1778, has always sought to be effective in their witness to the Greenville and Travelers Rest communities; and

Whereas, their pastor, Reverend David Simmons, has endeavored to lead his congregation in numerous ministries in the community that present the Gospel; and

Whereas, Reverend Simmons brought to his congregation a ministry concept, "Feed My Sheep", based upon the twenty-first chapter of the Gospel of John; and

Whereas, the Reedy River congregation has enthusiastically and generously made financial contributions to replace the lost public funding and keep the bag lunch program in place, already funding it beyond original requests by their pastor; and

Whereas, Mr. Morgan, his students and all the support around Duncan Chapel, the catalysts of the project, continue their service, supplemented by assistance in preparation of bags by Reedy River members during the recess of the school year. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate express their appreciation for Mr. Brian Morgan, his students and other volunteers, Reverend Simmons and the congregation of Reedy River Baptist Church for their profound compassion for, and service to "the least of these" in their community and commend their actions to the people of South Carolina.
