A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE POWDERSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND, BAND DIRECTORS, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2014 CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Powdersville High School marching band of Anderson County took top honors at the state competition held at Spring Valley High School in Columbia on October 25, 2014; and

Whereas, like most schools, the Powdersville High marching band began their rigorous season with a grueling band camp that lasted two weeks in the long process that they hoped would result in a perfect execution of an eight-minute show full of marching, playing from memory, and dancing; and

Whereas, after-school rehearsals continued the demanding and exacting work of conditioning, stretching, warm-ups, marching technique, learning drills, and striving for perfection; and

Whereas, unlike other schools, however, Powdersville had a director of bands who was determined to inspire her students. Leslie Phillips invited world-renown composer and band director, Richard Saucedo to meet the Powdersville band, and during his time with the band, he challenged the members to "Be happy, but not satisfied," a phrase that became the band's motto for the rest of the season; and

Whereas, when the Powdersville Patriot band took the competition field for the first time the following week to present their 2014 show, the musicians began their seven-week march to the championship; and

Whereas, placing in the top of their classification at every competition in less than two months, the Powdersville Patriots returned home with several grand championships and had won over forty trophies with consistent selection for best hornline, best colorguard, and best percussion; and

Whereas, undaunted when they placed second in the Upperstate competition by .5 points, the Patriots took the state championship trophy as they performed their "Twilight in the Garden of Dreams" show. Out of sixty-four AA schools in the State, Powdersville came home for the second time with a first-place finish, scoring 92.1 and winning High Music, High Visual, and High Overall Effect; and

Whereas, in a field that demands musical talent, marching, and memory, Director of Bands Leslie Phillips and her skilled directing staff capitalized on their own musical ability and training to build a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the marching field; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the Powdersville High School marching band musicians have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Powdersville High School marching band, band directors, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2014 Class AA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Chris Ferguson and Director of Bands Leslie Phillips.
