A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE CHRIST CHURCH EPISCOPAL SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2014 CLASS A DIVISION I STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the Christ Church Episcopal School football team of Greenville County took top honors at the state competition held at Benedict College in Columbia on Friday, December 5, 2014; and

Whereas, to the delight of their fans, the Christ Church Cavaliers defeated the Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School Red Raiders 23-14 to bring home the Cavaliers' fourth consecutive state trophy; and

Whereas, Christ Church received the opening kickoff and ran seventy-two yards in the next fourteen snaps. Senior quarterback Andrew Slade completed an eight-yard pass to teammate Radford Swent for the game's first touchdown. Swent would finish the game with one hundred eight yards on twenty-five carries; and

Whereas, in the second quarter, Christ Church was forced to punt from the Bamberg-Ehrhardt twenty-nine-yard line, and the Red Raiders caught it inside the one-yard line. On second down, with the ball still just outside the end zone, Bamberg-Ehrhardt crossed into the end zone, giving the Cavaliers a 9-0 lead on the safety; and

Whereas, Rudy Johnstone caught a nine-yard pass from Andrew Slade for another Cavalier touchdown. Slade would pass for two hundred fifty-five yards for the Cavaliers, eight times for one hundred nineteen yards of them to teammate Braxton Westfield; and

Whereas, Bamberg-Ehrhardt completed a fifty-one-yard touchdown run that brought the Red Raiders to within 16-7 before halftime; and

Whereas, with some three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Andrew Slade scored on a one-yard run, stretching the Cavalier lead to 23-7. The Red Raiders returned the kickoff for ninety-five yards and a touchdown, reducing the spread to 23-14; and

Whereas, senior defensive back Will Wynkoop for the Cavaliers made two interceptions, one that had spoiled an early drive by the Red Raiders and another that held the Bamberg-Ehrhardt at 14; and

Whereas, the Cavaliers rushed and pounded their way through a perfect season in a sport that requires strength, expertise, and determination, and one game at a time, they increased the team's winning streak to an enviable fifty-four straight games; and

Whereas, named the Division I Player of the Year, Andrew Slade led the Cavaliers to their fourth state title and their third perfect season in a row. He completed one hundred twenty-nine of two hundred five passes for 1,989 yards and thirty-two touchdowns, and carried the ball ninety-six times for five hundred eight yards and another seventeen touchdowns; and

Whereas, honored as the 2014 South Carolina Football Coaches Association Class A All-State Team Coach of the Year, Cavalier Head Coach Don Frost boasted nine other players in the Class A All-State Team: Rudy Johnstone, Dorien Dickey, Braxton Westfield, Zack Epting, Isaiah Alston, Josh Jackson, Thad Mangum, Will Wynkoop, and Michael Batson; and

Whereas, Coach Frost and his skilled coaching staff capitalized on their own athletic ability and training to forge a championship team and teach these athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the gridiron; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the pride and recognition that the Christ Church football players have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Christ Church Episcopal School football team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2014 Class A Division I State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Upper School Director Pete Sanders and Coach Don Frost.
