A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE LEWISVILLE HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY BASEBALL TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR AN OUTSTANDING SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2017 SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina Senate is pleased to learn that the members of the Lewisville High School baseball team of Chester County took top honors at the state championship in May of 2017; and

Whereas, to the delight of their fans, the Lewisville Lions defeated Lake View High School 6-4 on the Wild Gators' home diamond in the second game of the best two out of three series and posted the team's seventh state title since 1985; and

Whereas, in the top of the seventh inning of the second game, the score was tied 4-4 and Lewisville had two outs, when junior Quentin Sanders managed a hit that sent Mike Hill home, giving Lewisville a one-run lead. Chase Yoder escorted his teammate Sanders to home plate when he outpaced a throw to first base on a single, which widened the lead to 6-4; and

Whereas, Lewisville's Trey Keels pitched a complete game for his team, permitting only seven hits and forcing the Wild Gators to eek out every run; and

Whereas, Lions' second baseman Jack Jordan got on base three times and made a successful sacrifice bunt in his fourth attempt, while Sanders got on base four times in only four attempts, batting in two runs including the winning run; and

Whereas, Yoder held the Wild Gators at bay defensively at third base, handing them several outs, and he also got on base twice, including batting in the final run of the game in the seventh inning; and

Whereas, the Lewisville Lions ended their 2017 season with a 25-5 record and six team members were named All-Conference players: Andrew Culp, Chase Yoder, Jack Jordan, Alex Reed, Trey Leels, and Drew Colvin. Reed, Leels, and Colvin also were honored as All-State players, as well; and

Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, strategy, and quickness, Head Coach Billy Keels and his skilled coaching staff capitalized on their own athletic ability and expertise to forge a championship team and teach these young athletes lessons that will prove invaluable through life both on and off the diamond; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate appreciate the pride and recognition that the Lewisville Lions have brought to their school and their community and look to hear of their continued accomplishments in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Lewisville High School varsity baseball team, coaches, and school officials for an outstanding season and congratulate them for winning the 2017 South Carolina Class A State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Jim Knox and Coach Billy Keels of Lewisville High School.
