TO CONGRATULATE MARY MADGLEN STEPHENS OF DARLINGTON COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Mary Stephens of Darlington County will celebrate her one hundredth birthday on May 23, 2017; and
Whereas, born on May 23, 1917, in Chesterfield County in the early part of the twentieth century, she has been witness to the remarkable social changes, technological advancements, and international developments that have spanned the globe from that time into the second decade of the twenty-first century; and
Whereas, Mary has affectionately been known as the mother of the neighborhood. While waiting for the school bus, the children would flock to her house and sit on her porch or come inside to enjoy some delicious cooking. Parents never had to worry about their children, because they knew Mary was looking out for them; and
Whereas, an avid quilter, Mary has spent many hours creating beautiful masterpieces for friends and family. She is also a devoted member of Greenhill Baptist Church; and
Whereas, Mary is the proud mother of eight beloved children, Bonnie, Junior, John, Mary, Essie, Clarence, Harvey, and Janie. When her sister passed at a young age, Mary also took on the role of mother to her four nieces and nephews, Sarah, Evelyn, James, and Verna. With such a large, happy household, Mary has the blessing of numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to honor this daughter of South Carolina at the celebration of her one hundredth birthday and join with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, congratulate Mary Madglen Stephens of Darlington County on the occasion of her one hundredth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many years of continued health and happiness.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mary Madglen Stephens.
