TO HONOR GARY S. GLENN, INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT, TO EXTEND DEEP APPRECIATION FOR HIS MORE THAN FORTY-FOUR YEARS OF DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO OFFER BEST WISHES FOR A SATISFYING AND REWARDING RETIREMENT.
Whereas, for close to half a century, the State of South Carolina has enjoyed the benefit of the dedication, experience, and leadership of Gary S. Glenn, interim executive director of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, who on April 6, 2017, will retire after more than forty-four years of outstanding public service; and
Whereas, a graduate of the University of South Carolina, longtime Columbia resident Gary Glenn has distinguished himself in a career that has taken him from the Aeronautics Commission to the Department of Mental Health, the Department of Social Services, the Department of Education, and for the past eighteen years the Commission on Higher Education (CHE); and
Whereas, during most of this time, this patriotic son of South Carolina also has served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves, from which he retired as a lieutenant colonel after more than twenty-eight years of service. His state and military assignments have afforded him opportunities to serve in increasingly important roles, the most recent for the State being his selection in 2015 as interim executive director of the Commission on Higher Education; and
Whereas, Tim Hofferth, CHE chairman, offers this well-earned commendation in praise of Gary Glenn: "We wouldn't be where we are right now without Gary Glenn. He wanted to retire back in 2015, but we practically begged him to stay. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Gary and his wife, Kim, for being willing to put their plans on hold in order to serve the greater good. There was no one better qualified to lead this agency over the past two years of unprecedented transition. Gary's passion and dedication to higher education and the citizens of South Carolina are an inspiration to all of us as we continue on our path to move the CHE forward"; and
Whereas, his colleagues will remember Mr. Glenn's trademark phrase for his employees, "passion, commitment, and respect," and seek to honor it; and
Whereas, although Gary Glenn will be stepping back from the day-to-day operations of CHE, he has agreed, the House is pleased to learn, to continue to serve the agency and the State in a consulting capacity on a project-by-project basis at the request of the board; and
Whereas, Gary Glenn finds strength for his duties in the strong support of his family: his lovely wife, Kim; the couple's two children, Stephen and Erin; and two charming granddaughters, Sydney and Avery; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives is grateful for the legacy of consistent commitment and leadership Gary Glenn has bestowed on the people of South Carolina. Speaking on behalf of his many friends in state government, the House takes great pleasure in wishing him all the best as he enters retirement, and the members trust he will find much enjoyment in the more leisurely pace of the days ahead. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, honor Gary S. Glenn, interim executive director of the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, on the occasion of his retirement, extend deep appreciation for his more than forty-four years of distinguished public service to the State of South Carolina, and offer best wishes for a satisfying and rewarding retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Gary S. Glenn.
