VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-1-325 SO AS TO REQUIRE THE DISPLAY OF THE NATIONAL MOTTO OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE MOTTO OF THIS STATE IN ALL PUBLIC SCHOOL CLASSROOMS, AND PROVIDE THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO DEVELOP A STANDARD, DURABLE POSTER FOR USE IN DISPLAYING THESE MOTTOS.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Article 5, Chapter 1, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 59-1-325. (A) The State Board of Education shall develop a standard durable poster on which appears the:
(1) national motto of the United States of America, 'In God We Trust'; and
(2) motto of this State, 'Dum Spiro Spero' with its English translation, 'While I breathe, I hope'.
(B) A copy of the poster in subsection (A) must be displayed in all public elementary school, middle school, and high school classrooms in this State. The provisions of this subsection also apply to charter schools."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
