A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND REMEMBER THE SUPREME SACRIFICE MADE BY DETECTIVE MICHAEL R. DOTY OF THE YORK COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE IN THE LINE OF DUTY AND TO EXPRESS TO HIS FAMILY THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY AND APPRECIATION OF A GRATEFUL STATE FOR HIS LIFE, SACRIFICE, AND SERVICE.

Whereas, in all generations, it behooves an ordered, peaceful society to demonstrate appreciation to those men and women who make possible the safety and security of its citizens; and

Whereas, the people of the great State of South Carolina are singularly blessed with police officers, military servicemen and women, firefighters, rescue personnel, and Highway Patrol officers who serve selflessly, often putting their lives in danger in the delivery of that service; and

Whereas, Detective Michael R. Doty of the York County Sheriff's Office stands high among those men and women who have labored to ensure the safety and security of the Palmetto State and who, therefore, retain a place of honor in the hearts of its citizens; and

Whereas, on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, as an officer with the York County Sheriff's Office, Detective Doty was shot and seriously injured in the line of duty while attempting to locate a domestic-violence suspect; and

Whereas, the suspect, wanted for allegedly assaulting his wife, apparently had run on foot from his home before authorities arrived. An intense three-hour manhunt ensued, during which K-9 officers were called in to help track down the suspect. Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the suspect fired shots, ambushing the K-9 team. At approximately 3:30 a.m., the suspect fired shots, ambushing a SWAT team looking for him, and it was in that encounter that Detective Doty was seriously injured; and

Whereas, on January 17, 2018, at Charlotte's Carolinas Medical Center, this courageous deputy lost his fight for life, surrounded by his family as he passed away at the age of thirty-seven; and

Whereas, the first sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty in York County since 1992, Detective Doty had served with the York County Sheriff's Office (YCSO) for twelve years. The Fort Mill resident began working at the YCSO on May 22, 2006, and was an investigator with the York County Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Enforcement Unit, the coordinator for the YCSO for the Law Enforcement Officer Narcan (LEON) Program, and a member of the YCSO SWAT Entry Team. In addition, he served as an associate advisor for York County Explorer Post 1786, an assignment he especially enjoyed that allowed him to mentor young people interested in police work. Mike, a man of faith, attended Myers Park Baptist Church and further served his community as an EMT; and

Whereas, he is survived by his parents, James Robert Doty and Kathy Queen; his siblings, USAF Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Doty, Sergeant Christopher Doty of the York County Sheriff's Office, Patricia Gotchez, Christy Larsen, and Misty Mitchell; his son, Shane; a special aunt who helped raise Mike, Diana Dowling; and a host of other relatives, friends, and law enforcement brothers; and

Whereas, there is no greater or more courageous sacrifice a man can make than to lay down his life for a noble cause, as did Detective Mike Doty; and

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly counts it a great privilege to remember Detective Mike Doty, one of the Palmetto State's finest, and the members with one voice offer their grateful thanks to Almighty God for the service and ultimate sacrifice of this valiant son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor and remember the supreme sacrifice made by Detective Michael R. Doty of the York County Sheriff's Office in the line of duty and express to his family the deepest sympathy and appreciation of a grateful State for his life, sacrifice, and service.
