A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR JUSTICE JEREMIAH HILL, A SENIOR AT HEATHWOOD HALL EPISCOPAL SCHOOL IN COLUMBIA, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON BEING SELECTED AS THE NATIONAL WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DRUM MAJOR FOR JUSTICE ADVOCACY COMPETITION.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to learn that Justice Jeremiah Hill is the first South Carolinian to win the National Bar Association (NBA) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition on the regional or national level, and he took the title at the competition held in 2017 in Toronto, Canada; and

Whereas, born on November 10, 1999, he has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average throughout high school, was honored with the Heathwood Hall Scholar-Athlete Award for the years 2016 through 2018, and has consistently been named to the year-long honor roll from the ninth through the twelfth grades; and

Whereas, during his senior year, Justice was the team captain of the Heathwood Hall basketball team, and throughout his high school basketball career he has been selected to the All-Region team, All-State team, and South Carolina Independent School Association All-Star Team; and

Whereas, voted Most Likely to Be President by the senior class, he is a member of Heathwood's a cappella choral group, Men in Plaid, and he belongs to Alpha Phi Alpha Academy, National Beta Club, and National Society of High School Scholars. Serving as a student ambassador, he participates in various panels, including moderating a panel at Heathwood with the Honorable James Clyburn; and

Whereas, he served as an intern at the 5th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office during the summer of 2017 and for WIS News under the direction of sportscaster Rick Henry; and

Whereas, in 2016, Justice garnered the state and Southeast region championships for the Optimist International Oratorical Contest and finished third in the Optimist's world championship held at St. Louis University. He received the 2017-2018 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Keeper Award from the City of Columbia; and

Whereas, before winning the national award in Canada, Justice won the state's NBA MLK Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Contest in Spartanburg in 2017, and in March 2018, he won Omicron Iota Lambda's Dr. Alfred F. Young Oratorical Contest; and

Whereas, a member of Brookland Baptist Church, he is part of the VIBE Teen Church Leadership Committee, and he was selected to be the chair person for the church's Youth and Teens Day 2018; and

Whereas, Justice plans to attend St. Louis University in the fall of 2018 to major in political science and pursue a career as an attorney, following his favorite saying, "The sky is not the limit, it is only the beginning. Lift off!" to exceed his own expectations for himself; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives appreciates the recognition and pride that Justice Hill brings and the significant contributions he makes to his school and community, and the members look to hear of his continued achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Justice Jeremiah Hill, a senior at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, and congratulate him on being selected as the national winner of the National Bar Association Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major for Justice Advocacy Competition.
