A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO REMEMBER AND CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF BILL NICK SKENTERIS OF GREENVILLE COUNTY UPON HIS PASSING, AND TO HONOR HIS REMARKABLE WORK ETHIC AND COMMITMENT TO HIS COMMUNITY, AND TO EXTEND DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were saddened to learn of the death of Bill Nick Skenteris at the age of seventy-seven on Sunday, June 18, 2017; and

Whereas, born in Stenoma Evrytanias, Greece, on January 17, 1940, he was the son of the late Nick and Ourania Diamanti Skenteris and grew up on his parents' farm, enjoying Greek country music. He emigrated to the United States in 1956; and

Whereas, by 1959, Mr. Skenteris had opened his own restaurant, Palmetto Fine Foods on Laurens Road in Greenville, which he owned and operated for fifty-nine years. His son, Nick, joined him and now continues to operate the restaurant; and

Whereas, together with Mena Tsoutsoulopoulos Skenteris, his beloved wife of fifty-three, he reared three fine children: Nea Zambrano, Nick Skenteris, and Gina Skenteris-Smith. They blessed their parents with the love of seven grandchildren: Vickie, Tori, Joe, Sophia, Basil, Vivian, and Vasili; and

Whereas, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he and his wife cherished spending their summers in Greece with family, and from there, they would visit other countries around the globe; and

Whereas, a faithful member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Mr. Skenteris served on the St. George Parish council for six years and volunteered for various events within the church; and

Whereas, he was a member of the Evrytanian Association of America, known as Velouchi, serving as its treasurer for forty-one years and being honored by the organization with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He was also a dedicated member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA); and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are grateful for the life and legacy of Bill Skenteris and for the indelible mark of sacrifice and kindness he left on the Greenville community and on all who knew him. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, remember and celebrate the life of Bill Nick Skenteris of Greenville County upon his passing, honor his remarkable work ethic and commitment to his community, and extend their deepest sympathy to his large and loving family and his many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Bill Nick Skenteris.
