THE COMMITTEE ON

INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (H. 4142) to request the Department of Transportation name the intersection located at the junction of Legare Road and Jim Bilton Boulevard in Dorchester County "Claude Major, Jr. Intersection" and erect, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

JIMMY C. BALES for Committee.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE INTERSECTION LOCATED AT THE JUNCTION OF LEGARE ROAD AND JIM BILTON BOULEVARD IN DORCHESTER COUNTY "CLAUDE MAJOR, JR. INTERSECTION" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THIS INTERSECTION CONTAINING THIS DESIGNATION.

Whereas, Claude Major, Jr., was born on August 6, 1949, the son of the late Claude Major, Sr., and the late Mattie Brown Major in the Reevesville community; and

Whereas, in 1969 he enlisted in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1971; and

Whereas, in April 1972, he married Millie Sue Lewis. Together they raised three fine children before her death in 2007; and

Whereas, in 1974 Claude Major, Jr., began his career in law enforcement when he was hired by Dorchester County as a deputy sheriff. He attended and successfully completed his training at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in 1976; and

Whereas, during the past forty-three years, Claude Major, Jr., has risen through the ranks of the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office and served as a corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, major, and chief deputy. Today he serves as a major with the sheriff's office; and

Whereas, he continues to be a "crime fighting machine" in Dorchester County and owes his success as a law enforcement officer to the love and support that he receives from his family and friends; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to recognize the outstanding service that this son of the Palmetto State has given to the citizens of Dorchester County by having an intersection named in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request the Department of Transportation name the intersection located at the junction of Legare Road and Jim Bilton Boulevard in Dorchester County "Claude Major, Jr. Intersection" and erect appropriate markers or signs at this intersection containing this designation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
