A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF CAROWINDS BOULEVARD FROM THE NORTH CAROLINA-SOUTH CAROLINA BORDER TO THE JUNCTION OF CAROWINDS BOULEVARD AND INTERSTATE 77 IN YORK COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA "DETECTIVE MIKE DOTY MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS AT THE LOCATION CONTAINING THIS DESIGNATION.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Detective Michael R. Doty of the York County Sheriff's Office on January 17, 2018 and wish to honor and remember his supreme sacrifice in the line of duty; and

Whereas, at the age of thirty-seven, Detective Doty died a hero after being shot in an ambush by a domestic violence suspect. A dedicated public servant, he ran toward danger when others were running from it; and

Whereas, Detective Doty is the first York County law enforcement officer killed on duty since 1992. He had served the York County Sheriff's Office for twelve years and, as a member of the narcotics unit, had made a significant impact in his community by fighting the opioid crisis and saving young people from drugs and alcohol; and

Whereas, a man of faith, Detective Doty attended Myers Park Baptist Church and further served his community as an EMT; and

Whereas, one of the Palmetto State's finest, the late Detective Doty had love, affection, and honor for others and a strong belief in the power of good. His legacy of service remains with those who uphold these same ideals; and

Whereas, even in death, Detective Doty brought people together, as more than five thousand people attended his funeral at Calvary Church in Charlotte. Police came from as far away as Ohio and New York to pay tribute; and

Whereas, he is survived by his parents, James Robert Doty and Kathy Queen; his siblings, USAF Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Doty, Sergeant Christopher Doty of the York County Sheriff's Office, Patricia Gotchez, Christy Larsen, and Misty Mitchell; his son, Shane; a special aunt who helped raise him, Diana Dowling; and a host of other relatives, friends, and law enforcement brothers; and

Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to pay tribute to the life, service, and courageous sacrifice of this son of South Carolina by naming a road in York County in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of Carowinds Boulevard from the North Carolina-South Carolina border to the junction of Carowinds Boulevard and Interstate 77 in York County, South Carolina "Detective Mike Doty Memorial Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs at the location containing this designation.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation and to the family of Detective Michael R. Doty.
