TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE DORMAN HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES, COACHES, AND STAFF FOR AN OUTSTANDING YEAR AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM ON THEIR SIGNIFICANT ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to recognize Dorman High School for award-winning seasons in track, cross country, volleyball, and swimming; and
Whereas, the boys' track and field team won its first Class 5A state championship in school track and field history on May 12 and 13, 2017 at Spring Valley High School. The team defeated second-place Wando High School by 74 to 58. Several athletes also won individual 5A titles, including Wynn Johnson for the 1600-meter and 3200-meter races, Jordan Massey for discus, and Jayson Massey for shot put, all ranking first statewide in these events. With an undefeated varsity schedule, the team also became Spartanburg County and Region 3-5A champions. The boys' head coach, Jeffery Johns, was named USA Track & Field South Carolina Boys Coach of the Year and the South Carolina Coaches Association Boys Track Coach of the Year; and
Whereas, the boys' cross country team won the Class 5A state championship on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at Clemson Extension Sandhill Research and Education Center. The team scored 87 points, defeating Riverside High School by just one point. Dorman was again led by Wynn Johnson, who was the first overall finisher in the meet and who claimed Dorman's first individual state championship in cross country, with a winning time of 15:38. Wynn Johnson and Noah McLain were both named to the "All-State" team; and
Whereas, Dorman's volleyball team won its second straight Class 5A state title on Saturday, November 4, 2017, overcoming Wando High School. During the course of 2017, the volleyball team also won the Byrnes Invitational, the Dorman Tournament of Champions, and Region II-5A with an 8-0 record. The team's overall record was 43-6-1. Dorman finished the season ranked first in South Carolina and seventh by USAToday; and
Whereas, the Lady Cavaliers swim team finished the season not only as undefeated region champions, but also as the fourth-place overall team at the Class 5A state championship. In the 400 freestyle relay, Makenzie Blaakman, Hannah Weber, Alaina Smith, and Rachel Reistroffer won, crushing their school's record with a final time of 3:32.67. The medley relay team of Alaina Smith, Hannah Weber, Ashlin Wolfe, and Rachel Reistroffer all achieved their personal best times to finish third, with a season best and new school record. Rachel Reistroffer also won individual races to become a three-time state champion for the year, winning the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, setting four school records, and gaining All-State recognition; and
Whereas, Dorman High School's athletic teams have brought great pride and recognition to their school and community, and the Senate looks with great interest to hear of all further accomplishments by these talented athletes. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, honor and recognize Dorman High School athletes, coaches, and staff for an outstanding year and congratulate them on their significant athletic achievements.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Athletic Director Flynn Harrell, Coach Jeffery Johns, Coach Jeff Buys, Coach Paula Kirkland, Coach Amy Bailey, and Principal Ken Kiser.
