A house RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE Aiken high school varsity volleyball TEAM, COACHES, AND SCHOOL OFFICIALS FOR A STELLAR SEASON AND TO CONGRATULATE THEM FOR WINNING THE 2022 SOUTH CAROLINA CLASS AAAA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to learn that the members of the Aiken High School volleyball team garnered the state trophy from the state competition held at Dreher High School in Columbia on Saturday, November 5, 2022; and

Whereas, to the excitement of their exuberant fans, the Aiken High Lady Fighting Green Hornets defeated the fine, competitive team of the North Myrtle Beach Lady Chiefs in a nail-biting finish in the fifth game for the best three out of five, and ended the season with a 40-2 record; and

Whereas, Aiken took the first two sets with just more than the necessary two-point lead, both 25-22 but North Myrtle took the third set with only the two points 23-25 and had to fight for the fourth game, finally to take the set with two points, 27-29; and

Whereas, when the teams huddled up for their last preparations before the final set of the season, Aiken's Head Coach Jeremy Rinder had a simple message written on his clipboard, "Play the next point. Play the next point. Play the next point"; and

Whereas, forced to play the fifth game which only needed fifteen points to take the title, the Fighting Lady Hornets were trailing North Myrtle Beach 8-10, but fight they did, and Aiken matched the Lady Chiefs seven points for one to take the title in the fifth game 15-11; and

Whereas, it was Aiken's thirty-second consecutive win and third state championship in the program's history, the two previous being won in 2010 and 2016. With a senior class of seven, most of whom had played together since middle school and all of whom had been to three consecutive state semifinals and now two straight title matches, the Lady Hornets relied on their experience to redeem the previous year's loss to Pickens; and

Whereas, in a sport that demands strength, agility, and speed, Coach Jeremy Rinder is aware that the team's victory does not define his players, but it does speak to the effort and determination that they exerted to win. He and his skilled coaching staff maximized their own experience and passion to hone a championship-caliber team and teach these athletes lessons that will endure beyond the courts; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciates the pride and recognition that the Aiken volleyball players have brought to their school and their community, and the members look forward to following their continued achievements in the days ahead. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Aiken High School varsity volleyball team, coaches, and school officials for a stellar season and congratulate them for winning the 2022 South Carolina Class AAAA State Championship title.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Principal Alisa Hamrick and Coach Jeremy Rinder.
