WHEREAS, Dr. William M. Gray and other weather experts have forecast a very active 1997 Hurricane season for the United States; and
WHEREAS, atmospheric scientists have issued a forecast for eleven named storms during the period June through November, 1997; and
WHEREAS, three of the above-mentioned hurricanes are predicted to be Category III or IV storms and may strike the eastern coast of the United States; and
WHEREAS, South Carolina is located along the major route for the Atlantic hurricanes; and
WHEREAS, all agencies of government have had staff changes in the past several years.
WHEREAS, the South Carolina National Guard provides critical support in the event of a major hurricane causing destruction along the coastal areas of South Carolina, and the population of the State expects all supporting agencies to be fully prepared for the impact of a major hurricane along the coast.
NOW, THEREFORE, pursuant to the authority vested in me by the Constitution and Statutes of this State, I hereby order the South Carolina Adjutant General to call to active duty the State command and control personnel and equipment, for participation in hurricane training exercise(s) with the State Law Enforcement Division, the Emergency Preparedness Division, and other State officials during the period June 18-22, 1997.
