A Bill to amend Sections 40-22-190 and 40-22-200, Code of Laws of South
Carolina, 1976, relating to the regulation of engineers and land surveyors, so
as to provide that graduation from a four-year engineering technology program
may be qualification for registration as a professional engineer and for
certification as an engineer-in-training.

A BILL
TO AMEND SECTIONS 40-22-190 AND 40-22-200, CODE OF
LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE
REGULATION OF ENGINEERS AND LAND SURVEYORS, SO AS
TO PROVIDE THAT GRADUATION FROM A FOUR-YEAR
ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM MAY BE
QUALIFICATION FOR REGISTRATION AS A PROFESSIONAL
ENGINEER AND FOR CERTIFICATION AS AN
ENGINEER-IN-TRAINING.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Section 40-22-190 of the 1976 Code, as added by Act 99
of 1991, is amended by adding at the end :
"(3) Graduation in an engineering, related engineering
science, or engineering technology curriculum of four years or more
from a school or college that is accredited by the ABET. A specific
record of eight years or more of experience in engineering work of a
character satisfactory to the board, indicating that the applicant is
competent to practice engineering and who has passed the written
examination required of applicants in subsection (1) of this
section."
SECTION 2. Section 40-22-200 of the 1976 Code, as added by Act 99
of 1991, is amended by adding at the end:
"(3) Graduation in an engineering technology curriculum of
four years or more from a school or college that is accredited by the
ABET. A specific record of four years or more of experience in
engineering work of a character satisfactory to the board and passing the
written examination required of applicants in subsection (1) of this
section.
Applicants may take the written examination upon graduation, but
such applicants will not be certified as engineers-in-training until they
have four additional years of satisfactory experience."
SECTION 3. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
