AN ACT TO AMEND SECTION 14-5-610, AS AMENDED, CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, RELATING TO THE JUDICIAL CIRCUITS OF THE STATE, THE NUMBER OF JUDGES IN EACH CIRCUIT AND ADDITIONAL AT LARGE CIRCUIT JUDGES, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT THE OFFICE OF EACH AT LARGE JUDGE SHALL BE A SEPARATE OFFICE AND HAVE A NUMERICAL DESIGNATION; AND TO ESTABLISH NUMERICAL DESIGNATIONS FOR EACH SUCH OFFICE.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

At large circuit court judges

Section 1. The last paragraph of Section 14-5-610, added in Part IV of Act 164 of 1979, is amended to read:

"In addition to the above judges authorized by this section, there shall be six additional circuit judges elected by the General Assembly from the State at large for terms of office of six years. Such additional judges shall be elected without regard to county or circuit of residence. Each office of the large judges shall be a separate office and be assigned numerical designations of Seat No. 1, Seat No. 2, Seat No. 3, Seat No. 4, Seat No. 5 and Seat No. 6."

Designation of at large seats

Section 2. The numerical designations of the respective offices of at large circuit judges as provided for in the amendment to Section 14-5-610 of the 1976 Code contained in Section 1 of this act shall be as follows:

(a) The seat occupied by the Honorable Ralph King Anderson, Jr., on the effective date of this act shall be designated at large Seat No. 1.

(b) The seat occupied by the Honorable William Tindall Howell on the effective date of this act shall be designated at Seat No. 2.

(c) The seat occupied by the Honorable James McCullum Morris on the effective date of this act shall be designated at Seat No. 3.

(d) The seat formerly occupied by the Honorable Charles Victor Pyle, Jr., on the effective date of this act shall be designated at Seat No. 4.

(e) The seat occupied by the Honorable James Barnett Stephen on the effective date of this act shall be designated at Seat No. 5.

(f) The seat occupied by the Honorable Marion Hardy Kinon on the effective date of this act shall be designated at Seat No. 6.

Time effective

Section 3. This act shall take effect upon the approval by the Governor.
