AN ACT TO REVISE THE DATES FOR ELECTION OF MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF GREENVILLE COUNTY AND TO CHANGE THE TERMS FOR SUCH MEMBERS.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Trustees of School District of Greenville County-terms and dates of election changed

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, members of the Board of Trustees of the School District of Greenville County representing the even-numbered areas who were elected at the election held on August 31, 1976, shall serve until March 1, 1982, and successors to such members shall be elected in an election to be held on February 9, 1982, to take office on the first day of March immediately following their election. The terms of office of these members so elected that begin on March 1, 1982, shall expire on January 1, 1986, and successors to these members shall be elected in an election to be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, 1985, and on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each fourth year thereafter for terms of office of four years each to commence the first day of January following their election.

The trustees representing the odd-numbered areas who were elected at the election held on February 12, 1980, shall serve for terms to expire on January 1, 1984. Successors to these members shall be elected in an election to be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, 1983, and on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each fourth year thereafter for terms of office of four years each to commence the first day of January following their election.

At any election, the candidate in each area receiving the highest number of votes cast shall be elected. All members of the board shall serve until their successors have been elected and qualify.

To qualify as a candidate in any election to be held for members of the board, each candidate shall file with the Registration and Election Office of Greenville County a sworn statement giving his name, age, voting precinct, school election area in which such candidate is a legal resident and the period of residence in such school election area. This statement shall be filed at least forty-five days prior to the date set for such election, and not earlier than ninety days

prior to election day.

The county commissioners of election shall conduct and supervise all elections for members of the board. The commissioners shall prepare the necessary ballots, appoint managers for the voting precincts, and do all things necessary to carry out such elections, including the counting of ballots and declaring the results thereof. The commissioners shall advertise the date of such election sixty days preceding the election in all daily newspapers of general circulation published in Greenville County and publish a second notice two weeks later.

Time effective

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon approval by the Governor.
