A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING THE OCCASION OF W. A. PERRY TASK FORCE APPRECIATION DAY ON APRIL 30, 1995, AND COMMENDING THE MEMBERS OF THE W. A. PERRY TASK FORCE FOR THEIR UNTIRING EFFORTS IN IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION AND OVERALL CONDITIONS AT W. A. PERRY MIDDLE SCHOOL.

Whereas, in September, 1988, a group of seven community leaders joined together to meet head-on the problems existing at W. A. Perry Middle School; and

Whereas, this small group was encouraged by Principal Kenneth Law and Guidance Counselor Mrs. Mildred Prido in their discussions on the problems existing within the school; and

Whereas, this group consisted of Mary Solomon, Ethel Bolden, Marion Grate, Gussie Tucker, S. M. Richburg, Margaret Ervin, and Redfearn, II; and

Whereas, Dr. John V. Stevenson, the superintendent at that time, listened attentively to the concerns of this task force and added his support by assigning Camille Nairn, volunteer coordinator, and Alice Hurley, social worker, to assist the group; and

Whereas, as the W. A. Perry Task Force increased in membership from seven to forty persons representation was present from not only parents and community leaders but local organizations and agencies as well; and

Whereas, discussion groups called "Speak-Outs" were held with students, faculty members, parents, community workers, and interested citizens in an effort to address the problems and prioritize concerns in the areas of health, discipline, improved curriculum, student morale, teacher morale, parent involvement, enriched activities, and improved school environment; and

Whereas, in honor of the dedication and many accomplishments of the W. A. Perry Task Force, April 30, 1995, has been declared "W. A. Perry Task Force Appreciation Day." Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize the occasion of W. A. Perry Task Force Appreciation Day on April 30, 1995, and commend the members of the W. A. Perry Task Force for their untiring efforts in improving the quality of education and overall conditions at W. A. Perry Middle School.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the W. A. Perry Task Force.
