A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE MEMBERS OF THE EPSILON CHI OMEGA CHAPTER OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY ON THE ORGANIZATION'S CELEBRATION OF ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF PHILANTHROPIC COMMUNITY SERVICE THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES.

Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C., on January 15, 1908; and

Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by and for African-American college-trained women; and

Whereas, over the past one hundred years, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has earned the reputation of being a premiere philanthropic organization in recognition of their community service throughout the United States; and

Whereas, for over fifty-six years, the Epsilon Chi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in Florence has promoted education through various activities, including tutoring in local schools, providing annual scholarships to local students, and contributions to local colleges and universities. The Epsilon Chi Omega chapter sponsors local and national programs, such as Books for Breakfast and summer youth camps; and

Whereas, the Epsilon Chi Omega chapter continues to contribute to the Florence and Darlington communities, schools, and local business, and continues to stress the importance of education through its Partnership in Math and Science (PMIS); and

Whereas, the Epsilon Chi Omega chapter contributes to organizations such as the Pee Dee Coalition, the Manna House, United Negro College Fund, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate do congratulate the Epsilon Chi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority on the organization's celebration of one hundred years of philanthropic community service throughout the United States.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Epsilon Chi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in Florence.
