 OF RICHLAND COUNTY, AND TO COMMEND HER FOR NEARLY A QUARTER CENTURY OF SERVICE
 TO THE WIL LOU GRAY OPPORTUNITY SCHOOL.

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE WORK OF WILHELMINA MCBRIDE, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, AND TO COMMEND HER FOR NEARLY A QUARTER CENTURY OF SERVICE TO THE WIL LOU GRAY OPPORTUNITY SCHOOL.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly are grateful to Wilhelmina McBride for her years of faithful service on the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School Board of Trustees; and

Whereas, the first child of the late Catherine Calhoun McBride and Willie George McBride, Wilhelmina was reared in Columbia and graduated from C. A. Johnson High School in 1955; and

Whereas, after President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law, Wilhelmina McBride showed her leadership qualities as one of the first African Americans hired for jobs where discrimination previously had been practiced; and

Whereas, wanting to help others, she enrolled in Benedict College where she earned a degree in elementary education in 1966 and began teaching in the same district where she herself had earlier been a student; and

Whereas, she taught at Howard and Rosewood Elementary Schools until she retired in 1995, and then she continued at Gibbs Middle School as the lead teacher in the After-School Care Program; and

Whereas, in 1984, she was elected by the South Carolina Legislature to the board of the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School, where she has offered wisdom gleaned from years of classroom teaching and has served with distinction; and

Whereas, actively involved in her community, Wilhelmina McBride serves as the vice-president of the Jones McDonald Community Neighborhood Association; and

Whereas, always deeply involved in church fellowship from an early age, she worships at the First Nazareth Church of Columbia, and in her efforts to help others, she has had a positive impact on her schools, neighborhoods, and communities; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly express their profound gratitude to Wilhelmina McBride for her years of service to the students of Richland County and to the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor the work of Wilhelmina McBride, of Richland County, and commend her for nearly a quarter century of service to the Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Wilhelmina McBride.
