A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO RECOGNIZE DR. LEROY DAVIS, EIGHTH PRESIDENT OF
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY IN ORANGEBURG, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING
ACHIEVEMENTS AND TO EXTEND THE SINCERE WISHES OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL
ASSEMBLY TO HIM AND TO THE UNIVERSITY FOR A SUCCESSFUL AND PRODUCTIVE
TRANSITION INTO THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.

05/06/97 Senate Introduced, adopted, returned with concurrence SJ-11
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO RECOGNIZE DR. LEROY DAVIS, EIGHTH PRESIDENT OF
SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY IN ORANGEBURG,
FOR HIS OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS AND TO EXTEND
THE SINCERE WISHES OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL
ASSEMBLY TO HIM AND TO THE UNIVERSITY FOR A
SUCCESSFUL AND PRODUCTIVE TRANSITION INTO THE
TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.
Whereas, Dr. Leroy Davis is only the second alumnus and the first
Orangeburg native to be inaugurated as President of South Carolina
State University in its one hundred-one-year-history; and
Whereas, the road has been a challenging one, from his financially
harsh but love-filled childhood on Treadwell Street; to his
undergraduate and graduate scholarship, culminating in a doctorate
in molecular biology from Purdue University; to his successful
leadership at South Carolina State in the classroom, the laboratory,
and the administrative halls; to his historical inauguration as the
University's eighth President on March 22, 1997, at ceremonies
literally moments away but, in every other sense, miles away from
the home where he grew up; and
Whereas, Dr. Davis has traveled that road with extraordinary
intelligence, perseverance, integrity, and humility; and
Whereas, the life and achievements of President Davis serve as a
beacon to the young people of the University, the Orangeburg
Community, and the State of South Carolina, illuminating the values
of a loving family, a strong religious faith, a sincere respect for
humanity, and a keenly nurtured intellect; and
Whereas, President Davis can be relied upon to maintain his personal
values and demand the same from the University family and friends
who unite in moving the state's only historically black university into
a successful and productive Twenty-first Century; and
Whereas, the University, the Orangeburg community, and the State
of South Carolina will continue to be the beneficiaries of his
unselfish and exceptional service as he strives for results rather than
personal recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South
Carolina hereby recognize Dr. Leroy Davis, eighth President of South
Carolina State University in Orangeburg, for his outstanding
achievements and extend their sincerest wishes to him and the
University for a successful and productive transition to the
Twenty-first Century.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Dr. Davis.
