A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING THE SOUTH CAROLINA AREA HEALTH
EDUCATION CONSORTIUM (S.C. AHEC) ON ITS
TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY AND COMMENDING S.C.
AHEC FOR EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH CARE THROUGH
EDUCATION.
Whereas, in 1998, the South Carolina Area Health Education
Consortium (S.C. AHEC) marks its twenty-fifth anniversary and
celebrates a quarter century of excellence in health care through
education; and
Whereas, the twenty-fifth anniversary of S.C. AHEC will be marked
and celebrated on March 19-20 1998, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in
Columbia; and
Whereas, S.C. AHEC continues to be a model integrated and
collaborative educational system that builds the capacity for optimal
health in the Palmetto State; and
Whereas, an innovative statewide system that blends community
health service with the education of health professionals, S.C. AHEC
is a cooperative effort of the Medical University of South Carolina,
the University of South Carolina, Palmetto State community
hospitals, and local, nonprofit consortia; and
Whereas, since 1973 S.C. AHEC has grown to include seven regional
AHEC centers, a health care recruitment and retention center, four
free-standing family practice residency programs, and three multiple
residency sites, as well as the Central Office located on the MUSC
campus in Charleston; and
Whereas, S.C. AHEC won the National Pew Foundation Award of
Excellence in 1997; and
Whereas, S.C. AHEC's mission is to improve the quality and
accessibility of health care for the communities of South Carolina
through a system of community-academic partnerships whose central
purpose is the recruitment, education, and retention of primary health
care providers; this is accomplished through improved quality of
health care in the State with an emphasis on primary care, elimination
of medically underserved areas, and achievement of population parity
in the State's health professions workforce; and
Whereas, S.C. AHEC has rendered a record of splendid
accomplishments over the past quarter century and is highly
deserving of recognition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this
resolution, congratulates the South Carolina Area Health Education
Consortium on its twenty-fifth anniversary and commends S.C.
AHEC for excellence in health care through education.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
Dr. Sabre Slaughter, Executive Director of S.C. AHEC, 171 Ashley
Avenue, Charleston, S.C., 29425.
