A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO CONGRATULATE DEACON WILLIAM GRIFFIN, JR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY AS HE CELEBRATES HIS EIGHTY-FIFTH BIRTHDAY ON NOVEMBER 17, 2006, AND TO WISH HIM A MAGNIFICENT BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AS WELL AS MANY MORE YEARS OF HAPPINESS AND JOY.
Whereas, Deacon William Griffin, Jr., was born November 17, 1921, to the late William, Sr., and Ida Jones Griffin as the oldest of eleven children--six girls and five boys; and
Whereas, always a smart and intelligent individual, he received his education from Cedar Creek School in Ridgeway, South Carolina and left the State in 1934 for a brief time to attend school before returning to South Carolina, to graduate from Bethel High School in 1939; and
Whereas, upon graduating from Bethel, William attended Booker T. Washington in 1940, where he developed his trade as a carpenter; and
Whereas, a proud American citizen, he joined the United States Army in 1942 to serve in World War II and, after returning home from the war, he met and married the late Dorothy McDonald; and
Whereas, a loving and devoted couple, William and Dorothy were the proud parents of five wonderful children: James, Ida Bell, Loretta, Eveleen, and Karen; and
Whereas, he worked for Coleman Construction Company for more than twenty years before, tragically, his lovely wife Dorothy died in 1964 leaving him to raise their children alone; and
Whereas, Deacon Griffin fortunately found love again and he married Dorothy McAlister and became the father of their two children, Sharon and D'Encencio. As of today, Deacon Griffin has six living children, a step-daughter, Angela, twenty-two grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren; and
Whereas, never losing his desire to work, he remained employed by Coleman Construction Company until he decided to venture out and start his own company, Griffin Construction Company, from which he retired in 1999; and
Whereas, strong in faith, Deacon Griffin is a life long member and the oldest active member in attendance as of today at the Macedonia Baptist Church in Ridgeway, where he is the president of the Jubilee Choir, has served on the Deacon Board for fifty-three years, and was chairman for thirty-five years. He is the past president of the Number 1 Singing Convention, Past Secretary of the church, member of Purity Lodge # 42 in Ridgeway, and served as Treasurer of the Bethel High School PTA for many years; and
Whereas, Deacon Griffin is a well respected and a well known pillar in his community having constructed numerous building in the Columbia and surrounding areas including his home church that he attends in Ridgeway; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the House of Representatives to pause in their deliberations to recognize the many accomplishments of this remarkable man as he celebrates his eighty-fifth birthday. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Deacon William Griffin, Jr., of Richland County as he celebrates his eighty-fifth birthday on November 17, 2006, and wish him a magnificent birthday celebration as well as many more years of happiness and joy.
