H. 3646
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO COMMEMORATE THE SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CAROLINA CUP RACES IN CAMDEN AND TO WISH ITS PARTICIPANTS ALL THE BEST IN THE 2007 COMPETITION.
Whereas, a true South Carolina tradition, the Carolina Cup celebrates its seventy-fifth anniversary on March 31, 2007; and
Whereas, the inaugural race was run on March 22, 1930, at the historic Springdale Race Course, where over three thousand spectators came from as far away as Canada to watch the race unfold; and
Whereas, built by two northern winter residents of Camden, the Springdale Race Course was the first full length European style race course in the United States, boasting a unique feature in which every steeplechase jump can be viewed without obstruction from one spot; and
Whereas, in its seventy-five years in existence, the Carolina Cup has become a South Carolina institution, attracting more than seventy thousand fans each year for a day of steeplechase horse racing; and
Whereas, for many South Carolinians, the Carolina Cup is as much about socializing as it is about horse racing, as the race provides an opportunity for viewers to catch up with old friends during the many elaborate tailgating festivities; and
Whereas, in addition to the Carolina Cup in the spring, the Carolina Cup Racing Association hosts the Colonial Cup, another steeplechase horse race, held in the fall; and
Whereas, dedicated to giving back to the surrounding community, the Carolina Cup Racing Association had donated over 1.2 million dollars to Kershaw County Medical Center in the past decade; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives look forward to this year's steeplechase race and celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of this great southern tradition. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commemorate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Carolina Cup races in Camden and wish its participants all the best in the 2007 competition.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Carolina Cup Racing Association.
