Whereas, the scientists in the cutting-edge laboratories of America's pharmaceutical research companies create most of the world's new medicines, which benefit tens of millions of people; and
Whereas, because of their efforts, more than 2,500 medicines are in development today to give patients more and better therapeutic options; and
Whereas, these potential new treatments include pharmaceuticals for cancer, Alzheimer's disease, infectious disease, heart disease, arthritis, stroke, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, and many other life-threatening and debilitating diseases and medical conditions; and
Whereas, the men and women who discover and develop these medicines deserve recognition for their life-saving and life-enhancing accomplishments; and
Whereas, since 1987, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America annually has presented the Discoverers Award in recognition of the finest scientists and achievements in the research and development of medicines that have greatly benefited humankind and for their dedication to improving the quality of life; and
Whereas, award recipients through the years have included the creators of vital new medicines for life-threatening infections, chronic myeloid leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis, AIDS, lowering cholesterol, and preventing rejections of life-saving organ transplants. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America on the twentieth anniversary of its Discoverers Award program, which each year honors scientists whose tireless research and development of new pharmaceuticals have greatly benefited people all over the world.
