A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR RETIRED MAJOR GENERAL JAMES E. LIVINGSTON OF THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS FOR HIS LONG AND DISTINGUISHED MIITARY CAREER, AND TO WISH HIM WELL AS HE DELIVERS THE KEYNOTE ADDRESS TO THE 111TH ANNUAL CONVENTION OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA FUNERAL DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION ON JUNE 9, 2009.

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is pleased to note that retired Major General James E. Livingston will serve as keynote speaker for the 111th Annual Convention of the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association (SCFDA), to be held at Myrtle Beach, June 7-9, 2009; and

Whereas, a native of Towns, Georgia, General Livingston was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in June 1962, following his graduation from Auburn University; and

Whereas, on May 2, 1968, while serving as commanding officer for Company E, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, he distinguished himself beyond the call of duty in combat action against hostile forces in the Republic of Vietnam, his uncommon valor and uniquely courageous actions earning him the Congressional Medal of Honor; and

Whereas, in March 1975, General Livingston returned to Vietnam and served as operations officer for the Vietnam evacuation operations, which included Operation "Frequent Wind," the famous evacuation of Saigon; and

Whereas, General Livingston is a graduate of the Amphibious Warfare School, Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and Air War College. In addition to the Medal of Honor, his decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal; Silver Star Medal; Defense Superior Service Medal; Bronze Star Medal, with Combat "V"; Purple Heart, Third Award; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; Meritorious Service Medal, Second Award; Navy Commendation Medal, with Combat "V"; Combat Action Ribbon, Second Award; and various other service and foreign decorations; and

Whereas, having now retired from the military, General Livingston, a resident of Mt. Pleasant, presently consults with numerous companies and serves on several boards, including that of National Veterans Affairs. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor retired Major General James E. Livingston of the United States Marine Corps for his long and distinguished military career, and wish him well as he delivers the keynote address to the 111th Annual Convention of the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association on June 9, 2009.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to retired Major General James E. Livingston.
