A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF CAINHOY ROAD IN BERKELEY COUNTY FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 41 TO CAINHOY MIDDLE SCHOOL "SERGEANT EARL SINGLETON MEMORIAL HIGHWAY" AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY CONTAINING THIS DESIGNATION.
Whereas, Sergeant Earl Singleton of Huger, Berkeley County, was a member of the 101st Airborne Division; and
Whereas, on December 12, 1985, he and the members of his Army infantry regiment were returning to the United States from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, where they were members of a United Nations peacekeeping force; and
Whereas, enroute to Fort Campbell, Kentucky, their plane crashed in Gander, Newfoundland, killing all on board; and
Whereas, the General Assembly continues to remember Sergeant Earl Singleton, who gave his life for his country and for the preservation of peace; and
Whereas, it would be fitting and proper to preserve Sergeant Singleton's legacy by having a portion of Cainhoy Road in Berkeley County named in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly request the Department of Transportation name the portion of Cainhoy Road in Berkeley County from its intersection with South Carolina Highway 41 to Cainhoy Middle School "Sergeant Earl Singleton Memorial Highway" and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway containing this designation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Department of Transportation.
