A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE HEARTFELT ADMIRATION AND CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE NAVY JUNIOR ROTC DRILL TEAM OF SILVER BLUFF HIGH SCHOOL IN AIKEN COUNTY ON BEING NAMED THE "SOUTH CAROLINA NAVY JUNIOR ROTC STATE CHAMPION" FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR AT THE STATEWIDE DRILL COMPETITION SPONSORED BY THE NROTC UNIT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, ON JANUARY 22, 2000, AND TO PreviousWISHNext THE TEAM CONTINUED SUCCESS AT THE NATIONAL DRILL MEET TO BE HELD AT THE NAVY'S TRAINING CENTER IN GREAT LAKES, ILLINOIS, ON APRIL 6 AND 7, 2000.

Whereas, Silver Bluff High School in Aiken County has cause to be extremely proud of its Navy Junior ROTC unit and drill team; and

Whereas, in April, 1999, the General Assembly was honored to recognize the Silver Bluff High School Navy Junior ROTC unit and drill team on the first occasion of its being named the "South Carolina Navy Junior ROTC State Champion", and, now, the General Assembly has the distinct honor and pleasure of recognizing this team for winning this title for the second straight year; and

Whereas, this Navy Junior ROTC drill team practiced diligently, worked hard, and "stressed the basics" of the precision drill and rifle toss which were the key to its success; and

Whereas, nine of the fourteen members of the team are brand new this year; this fact makes their championship even more special; and

Whereas, the drill team's disciplined practice culminated on January 22, 2000, at the University of South Carolina in Columbia where the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Statewide Drill Championship was held. This event was conducted in extremely adverse conditions including biting winds and temperatures well below freezing; and

Whereas, the competition consisted of seven events: the armed platoon, unarmed platoon, armed squad, unarmed squad, fancy squad, fancy duo, and color guard; and

Whereas, the Silver Bluff Navy Junior ROTC unit captured first place in four events: unarmed platoon, color guard, armed squad, and fancy duo, and placed second in fancy squad. The team's total score was over sixty points above the total of the school team which placed second; and

Whereas, because of its outstanding performance Silver Bluff was declared the "State Champion" for the second straight year and it has been invited to return to the National Drill Meet to once again compete against the top twenty Navy Junior ROTC schools in the nation on April 6 and 7, 2000, at the Navy's Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois; and

Whereas, each member of this drill team is to be commended for his dedication, hard work, and countless hours of practice and marching. The Drill Team instructors, who have been so instrumental in the team's success, must be commended also. They are Lieutenant Commander Ronald Freeman and Gunnery Sergeant Darrell Jones. Now therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly extend their heartfelt admiration and congratulations to the Navy Junior ROTC Drill Team of Silver Bluff High School in Aiken County on being named the "South Carolina Navy Junior ROTC State Champion" at the statewide drill competition sponsored by the NROTC unit at the University of South Carolina, on January 22, 2000, for the second straight year, and Previouswish the team continued success at the National Drill Meet to be held at the Navy's Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois, on April 6 and 7, 2000.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the Silver Bluff Navy Junior ROTC Drill Team Instructor, Lieutenant Commander Ronald Freeman.
