A CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION
TO REQUEST THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO
NAME A CERTAIN PORTION OF U.S. HIGHWAY 29 IN
GREENVILLE COUNTY IN HONOR OF MR. LEVIS L.
GILSTRAP, ONE OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S MOST
DISTINGUISHED REALTORS AND CIVIC AND COMMUNITY
LEADERS.
Whereas, Levis L. Gilstrap of Greenville is one of South Carolina's
most distinguished business and civic leaders and is recognized
throughout the State as one of our most prominent realtors; and
Whereas, Mr. Gilstrap grew up in Easley and after military service
returned to the Upstate where he went into the real estate business
with his brother. He went on to become a home builder who
developed several subdivisions and built more than a thousand homes
in Greenville and Pickens Counties; and
Whereas, he is a life member of the Greenville Board of Realtors, a
member of the South Carolina Home Builders Association which he
served as local and state president, was named "Builder of the
Year" in 1969, and recently was inducted into the South
Carolina Home Builders Hall of Fame; and
Whereas, Mr. Gilstrap helped to establish the State Residential Home
Builders Commission (now the South Carolina Residential Builders
Commission) on which he has served for more than twenty-four years
representing the Fourth Congressional District; and
Whereas, he has been a member of Civitan International for
thirty-seven years with a perfect attendance record and has served as
president of his local chapter, lieutenant governor for the district, and
sergeant-at-arms for International Civitan. He is a member of White
Oak Baptist Church where he is a deacon and trustee and has served
as Sunday School superintendent and teacher; and
Whereas, he and his lovely wife are blessed with four children, eight
grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren of whom he is very proud
and to whom he is extremely devoted; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly believe it would be
a fitting tribute to this outstanding South Carolinian if U.S. Highway
29 in Greenville County from Church Street to Pine Knoll Drive were
named in his honor. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly hereby request the
Department of Transportation to name that portion of U.S. Highway
29 in Greenville County from Church Street to Pine Knoll Drive as
the "Levis L. Gilstrap Highway" in honor of Mr. Levis
L. Gilstrap, one of South Carolina's most distinguished realtors and
civic and community leaders. The department is further requested to
erect appropriate markers or signs along this highway reflecting this
designation.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to
the Department of Transportation and Mr. Gilstrap.
