Whereas, the 1998 award for Most Outstanding Festival in a

Christmas Festival of Bennettsville; the award was presented to
Mary Altman, founder of the festival, by Governor Beasley; and
Whereas, Thee Christmas Festival won top honors for
tourism at the Governor's Luncheon on May 5, 1998; the luncheon,
held in Columbia, was sponsored by the South Carolina Department
of Parks, Recreation and Tourism in celebration of National Tourism
Week; and
Whereas, Thee Christmas Festival, an annual event held in
Bennettsville the weekend before Thanksgiving, has been in
existence for only one year, making the award all the more special;
and
Whereas, the Altman family has so unselfishly contributed to the
quality of life of Bennettsville and Marlboro County by expanding
the arts and cultural programs in the community and by restoring
many historic structures for future generations to enjoy; and
Whereas, this is a great honor for Mary Altman and the sponsors,
promoters, and volunteers of the festival, the City of Bennettsville,
and the County of Marlboro; and
Whereas, we are pleased to have this opportunity to accord special
recognition to the festival and to all of the good people of
Bennettsville and Marlboro County who helped make it such a
successful event in its first year of operation. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate
