AN ACT TO RATIFY AN AMENDMENT TO SECTION 26 OF ARTICLE V OF THE CONSTITUTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1895, RELATING TO MAGISTRATES, SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT TERMS OF MAGISTRATES MUST BE UNIFORM STATEWIDE.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
Constitutional amendment ratified
SECTION 1. The amendment to Section 26 (formerly Section 23) of Article V of the Constitution of South Carolina, 1895, prepared under the terms of Joint Resolution 203 of 1985, having been submitted to the qualified electors at the general election of 1986 as prescribed in Section 1 of Article XVI of the Constitution of South Carolina, 1895, and a favorable vote having been received on the amendment, is ratified and declared to be a part of the Constitution so that Section 26 of Article V is amended to read:
"Section 26. The Governor, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, shall appoint a number of magistrates for each county as provided by law. The General Assembly shall provide for their terms of office and their civil and criminal jurisdiction. The terms of office must be uniform throughout the State."
Ratified the 10th day of February, 1987.
