AN ACT TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 8-11-155 SO AS TO ALLOW ADOPTIVE PARENTS EMPLOYED BY THE STATE OR ITS DEPARTMENTS, AGENCIES, OR INSTITUTIONS TO USE CERTAIN ACCRUED LEAVE FOR THE PURPOSE OF CARING FOR THE CHILD AFTER PLACEMENT.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
Use of leave by adoptive parents employed by the State
SECTION 1. Article 1, Chapter 11, Title 8 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 8-11-155. (A) An adoptive parent who is employed by this State, its departments, agencies, or institutions may use up to six weeks of his accrued sick leave to take time off for purposes of caring for the child after placement. The employer shall not penalize an employee for requesting or obtaining time off according to this section.
(B) The leave authorized by this section may be requested by the employee only if the employee is the person who is primarily responsible for furnishing the care and nurture of the child."
Time effective
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
