EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO THE HONORABLE JOHN E. BOURNE, JR., FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NORTH CHARLESTON.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly note that the Honorable John E. Bourne, Jr., will be leaving office after completing his fifth term as mayor of the City of North Charleston; and
Whereas, Mayor Bourne, first elected mayor in 1972, previously served with distinction as a member of the Charleston County Council and in the South Carolina Senate; and
Whereas, during his tenure as mayor, the City of North Charleston grew and prospered, undergoing tremendous development until it now ranks third in population of South Carolina cities, according to the 1990 census; and
Whereas, in further service to the cause of strong and responsive municipal government, Mayor Bourne served on the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities, and on that organization's Advisory Council, as an active participant in the activities of the United States Conference of Mayors and the National Conference of Republican Mayors and Municipal Elected Officials; and
Whereas, among many other activities promoting good government and intergovernmental cooperation, Mayor Bourne also served on the Legislative Committee of the Municipal Association of South Carolina, on the South Carolina Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations, and on the Executive Committee of the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments; and
Whereas, it is appropriate for members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to recognize and express their appreciation for the dedicated public service of this distinguished South Carolinian. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express appreciation to the Honorable John E. Bourne, Jr., for his distinguished service as mayor of the City of North Charleston.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable John E. Bourne, Jr.
