EXPRESSING SYMPATHY TO THE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS OF THE LATE WILEY KOON, SR.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were saddened to learn of the death on January 29, 1992, of Mr. Wiley Koon, Sr.; and
Whereas, Mr. Koon, born in Richland County, was a Columbia merchant and realtor and was one of the original six organizers of The Independent Merchants Association of South Carolina, which he served as legislative chairman; and
Whereas at twenty-five years of age he was one of the youngest agents for Standard Oil Company; and
Whereas, in 1954, he founded The Wiley J. Koon Realty Firm and was a licensed broker by the South Carolina Real Estate Commission; and
Whereas Mr. Koon was a charter and life member of the Jamil Temple, AAONMS of Columbia, A Sir Knight of Columbia Chapter 5 RAM, Union Council 5R&SM and Columbia Commander 2KT. He was a member of Earlewood Masonic Lodge 371, an honorary member of the Laurens County Shrine Club, a member of American Legion Post 6, and a life sponsor of The Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Inc., as well as a member of the DAV, Woodrow Wilson Chapter, the South Carolina Sheriff's Association, Friends of Richland Memorial Hospital, and Shandon Chapter 139 Order of Eastern Star; and
Mr. Koon was a member of the Republican Party and a charter member of the Republican Presidential Task Force and the National Senatorial and Congressional Committee, and he also served on the Columbia City Zoning and Planning Commission; and
Mr. Koon was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Earlewood Baptist Church; and
Whereas, it is fitting that the members of the General Assembly pause in their deliberations to note the passing of so distinguished a South Carolinian. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly express sympathy to the family and many friends of the late Wiley Koon, Sr.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Aurelia Jeffcoat Koon.
